This has been an interesting week as all of the tools were new to me. I had the additional roadblock of having facebook and myspace forbidden at work, so I started with LinkedIn. I really liked it and found it amazing how many people I could find. Who knew! I knew one of my Midwest Chapter buddies is good at this stuff and had been using Web 2.0 for some time. I looked her up and got some great ideas! Fortunately I have a computer at home and could leisurely play with facebook. I chose to use an alias for this assignment, but those who know me could probably figure it out.
Social networking and MLA
Once on Facebook I was amazed at what all you can do! For example, being able to add/view activities could be very useful. I will wager that most librarians have some Internet connectivity from their homes, but for those who don't, social networking sites are often blocked at the worksite. For MLA to use social networking as an additional venue for information sharing, this is a great idea. It most likely works best for the younger crowd or those in academic situations. The meeting information was very helpful. When people post their attendance, this reconnects people and affords the opportunity to contact others easily to meet up, find a roomate, etc. The MLA rss feeds are helpful, but the facebook options seem to allow access to much more information.
Use of Facebook for the library
For me this is not an option as it is blocked at my hospital. Having said that, I think is would be a great way to communicate with the new med students and residents. Many of them are already using this tool and we would be coming to them on their own turf.
Privacy Issues
It is a little big brotherish. I used an alias for this assignment, mailnly because this stuff is totally new to me and I just wanted to get going and learn. Like our instructions warned--only post what you are comfortable with. At least you are in control of what is listed. You can't control what others may write on your wall....
Likes/Dislikes of Facebook
I need much more time to play and learn about how to use facebook. I didn't find it very intuitive or easy to learn at first. Would be nice if they had a help or FAQ section. (If there is one, I didn't find it but the class help answered all my questions). The potential for sharing and connecting is definitely there. It makes email seem so simple and plain. Hard to say if this is just one more tool to stifle verbal communication or if it connects and informs...
